Our Alignment is the place where any colleague can look at another to learn what someone is working on and why.
The Our Pillars and the Our Alignment apps are at the heart of working together better and we suggest your organization begins with Our Pillars.
Every week your organization applies effort to reaching its goals. Or does it? Is effort being misspent? When it comes to communication, how does the left arm know what the right arm is doing, and why? Is communication siloed in your organization to where one team has no idea what another is doing?
When an organization is rowing in the same direction, goals will be met. When an organization is rowing in the same direction efficiently, however, goals will be met more quickly. Having an aligned organization that communicates effort is important for many reasons, ranging from employee engagement (a sense that each individual effort is contributing to the bigger picture) to simply ensuring there’s no duplicated effort.
Unitonomy’s Our Alignment app provides a simple system for every person inside your organization to telegraph their effort and map it back to bigger goals -- essentially providing the ‘why’ behind the effort performed. Our Alignment is not a project management tool, nor is it an OKR system. It’s a weekly check-in app that asks each team member for their focus for the week (list two at most). At a glance, the whole team can know what each member is trying to inch forward each week and how it ties to the organizational effort. Simple, clean, yet critical, especially across remote teams.
Our Alignment presents a hierarchy that runs like this:
- Company Goals: the goals shared by everyone in the organization and updated about once a year.
- Objectives: the goals shared by a team or an individual that map back to wider Company Goals and typically updated once a quarter.
- Focus: the main, personal effort this week that maps back to an Objective.
At the beginning of each week, Unitonomy automatically asks each person to set their Focus for the week. If you connect Slack or Microsoft Teams, the question will appear inside the connected messenger. Otherwise, an email notification will be sent to the person’s inbox at a designated weekly time (we suggest Monday morning). Once the individual answers their Focus question, they will get a follow-up question asking them to pick the Objective to which that the Focus maps.
At any point, anyone within your organization can visit the Unitonomy dashboard and search for another person in the organization to see their weekly Focus and how it maps back to Objectives and Company Goals.
Additionally, this information has a visualization option that shows overall effort applied to all Company Goals over time. This gives management a sense of organizational focus in terms of whether effort is being applied in the right, most urgent areas or not.
Unitonomy’s Our Alignment is a critical tool to help your team work together better. As you all move toward your collective end goals, let’s make sure your efforts are in unison and efficient by communicating and signaling regularly to the others moving toward the same end.
